Jully Black doesn't believe in holding back. And she never wants to. Brash and beautiful, Black's interview style may be unconventional, but it always brings the best out of her interview subjects. And it's these qualities that make Black a refreshing part of the etalk team. She has been a go-to etalk reporter for sit downs with some of music's biggest names, including Jay Z, Alicia keys, Rihanna and Shakira.
Black is the ultimate multi-tasker. Whether it's singing her heart out on her spirited and successful albums, adding a song for Destiny's Child song to her writing credits, acting in the theatre production and TV series Da Kink in my Hair or touring with the Black Eyes Peas, there's an apparent fearlessness to Black that's both admired and awarded.
Since her early years belting it out in her local church, Jully has become a renowned fixture on Canada's music scene and has emerged as a Canadian R&B superstar. A nominee of countless awards, in 2008, Black's second album Revival won the JUNO Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. The four-time JUNO Award nominee has also taken home a MuchMusic Video Award.
With a signature rasp and soul-stirring voice, Black's distinct sound has captured the ears of rappers and R&B artists south of the border, leading to opening act duties for Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Usher and the Black Eyed Peas. At the 2005 Montreal Jazz Festival, she shared the stage with R&B legends Patti Labelle and Aaron Neville. She was featured on The Brown Sugar Soundtrack and received songwriting credits for her work in the films The Fighting Temptations and You Got Served.
As one of Canada's top hip-hop artists, Black recognizes and relates to the Canadian star system. "My biggest accomplishment is gaining international recognition while being able to maintain my maple leaf status," she says. Black most recent album was Black Book, featuring the single Running.
