2006 Juno Nominees
Deserving or Dismal?

This year’s Juno Nominees have been announced and to be honest they’re a little disappointing….some of them, almost laughable if you ask me. In case you haven’t heard for Album of the Year, the nominees are:
Christmas Songs – Diana Krall
219 Days – Kalan Porter
It’s Time – Michael Buble
All The Right Reasons – Nickelback
Under the Lights – Rex Goudie
Ok, I support Diana Krall and all but how is it possible for a Christmas CD to be considered in this category? She took a selection of popular holiday songs, laid down some vocals and that warrants an album of the year nomination?
I’m all for endorsing new Canadian artists and while seeing Kalan Porter in this category was a bit of a surprise, he did work with some great songwriters, producers (and hairstylists) this past year to launch a poppy/rocky CD that has gone double-platinum in Canada. But Rex Goudie? Rex “Idol Runner-Up” Goudie has one of the best albums of the year? I find that hard to believe. We’re talking about ALBUM OF THE YEAR here people….the best of the best! I also find it hard to believe that he deserves to be in the coveted ARTIST OF THE YEAR category.
I guess what’s most disappointing is that these awards are supposed to represent the pinnacle of Canadian Music and in my opinion they fail to do so in some categories. That being said, I wish all the nominees the best of luck…..I’ll be out in Halifax to support my fellow Canadians….Idols and all.
