Hi, My Name Is...

Blog by Husein Madhavji, Friday, March 03, 2006

I'll be the first to admit, being named "Husein" isn't exactly easy. When I was young, people couldn't pronounce it. Now its pretty unforgettable for the worst reasons.

That being said, I think when some people meet me, inside their heads they think "His name can't possibly be Husein", so they call me names like "Hassan", "Jose", "Hose-ayn" and even "Mohammed". Yup, I have heard everything... until my recent interview with the great Joan Collins.

The Dynasty Diva was in town to promote her upcoming play "Legends" starring Joan and fellow on-screen rival Linda Evans. So here's what went down: I met Joan at the Royal Alexander theatre, and clearly introduced myself as "Husein".

Seven minutes later, after we talked about her play and egos in Hollywood, I wrap it up by saying "thank you Joan." At this moment in time, anything could have happened. She could have said "anytime" and not use my name, she could have attempted my name but risk something like "Jor-hay" come out of her mouth... Or she could do what only Joan Collins would do, which by the way she did.

Instead of using my name, or anything similar, she said... "thank you John."

John, yup, that's what she called me, John. Sounds very very similar to Joan, and why not? If you can't pronouce my name or don't like it, name me something else, maybe something similar to your name!!

Instead of correcting her, I figured, hey, its Joan Collins and I've just been knighted by the great Hollywood Diva.

Am I upset, no? In fact I'm proud to now be called... John.
