A Pirates Life for ME!
My life-changing interview with Johnny Depp
Blog by Dina Pugliese, Wednesday, July 05, 2006
Two words. Johnny. Depp. Every once in a while an interview comes along that changes your life. Okay - I'm being melodramatic but this one calls for it so bear with me.
I headed over to lalaland to screen the most anticipated movie of the summer and interview the entire cast. Yes, I'm talking PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN DEAD MAN'S CHEST…I don't want to give anything away but I will say that I LOVED the movie…expect incredible special effects, another brilliant performance from johnny a.k.a Captain Jack Sparrow and excellent additions to the cast including Bill Nighy (the nastiest villain of all sea villains - mark my words, you'll never look at calamari the same way again) Stellan Skarsgard (plays Orlando's dad) and Naomie Harris (the hot new swamp gympsy that will give you guys great eye candy seeing as Keira trades the corset for trousers in this one).
But I digress - the real point of my BLOG is to set the record straight about Johnny. (Often described as introverted and guarded, he was my last interview of a very long day - you only get four minutes with the stars but because things were falling so far behind, his interviews got shaved down to a mere THREE! It takes three minutes just to spit out the darn movie title for pete's sake!) Needless to say, I expected the worst, I thought he'd be tired from all the talking and not be into it…I will never doubt the Depp again. I mean, a man who picks up and moves to the South of France just to escape the madness that is Hollywood has got to be gold right? And on a side note... who else could rock gold teeth and Harry Potter glasses in real life?
I know, I'm taking WAY too long to get to the meat here. Wait no more.
Johnny is intense….in a good way - he locks eyes, waits for your question and actually pauses before answering. He comes up with really clever responses that aren't scripted soundbites spewed out to spare him from thinking through what can be a tedious junket process.
Now three minutes isn't much to base anything on, but I'll tell you that after doing enough of these (junkets that is) I can walk away knowing THIS about the man I've admired since 21 Jump Street…..Sir Johnny Depp (yes, I've knighted him) is a rare breed - a genuine, thoughtful and passionate actor who is in this whole movie-making thing…for the…dare I say it… LOVE OF THE ART and NOT the money or the fame…..there, I said it. For this, I feel invigorated…alive... like a new woman!
P.S. if you want to know WHAT he said….tune into the show…I'm not giving everything away in this blog…..I will say this…he addresses the Keith Richards cameo rumour and actually opens up about his kids!
