Everybody has a story; some people just choose not to share it. At one point or another we’ve all had struggles, hardships, and circumstances that have turned us into stronger, better people. Unfortunately, some people have to live those hardships in front of the entire world. Publicly or privately, no personal battle is easier than the next, however, it seems that the best way to deal with any sort of personal issue; is to write it in a book and document it for people to read forever.

Over the past year former *NSYNC member Lance Bass took the time to come out of the closet after rumours began to circulate that he was in a relationship with Amazing Race winner Reichen Lehmkuhl. I can fully appreciate the bravery in a move like that. Even in the year 2007, (2006 at the time he came out) people can be horribly judgmental. It would be nice to believe we’re an advanced society with morals and strengths and an evolving view on the world… unfortunately that isn’t always the case. Homosexuality is still a taboo topic in the eyes of some people, and Lance bravely admitted a secret he had been hiding for years.

Recently, Bass announced that he would be writing an autobiography about his time in the boy band and coming out of the closet. Correct me if I’m wrong but, what more is their to tell? Didn’t Lance share his story in an exclusive interview with People Magazine? What more could we possibly learn about Lance in his autobiography? He was in the biggest boy band of all time, he’s a homosexual, and he’s no longer dating Reichen. There really isn’t anything, from what I understand, new and eventful that I would like to read about.

Coming out, being in a high profile music group, the trials of being famous, I’m pretty sure those are all typical celebrity biographies. I’m interested to see what a publishing company believes is unique and interesting about Lance’s story. I don’t know that I’m interested enough to go out of my way and read the book, but I’m interested to hear stories of his adventures from other people that have read it. In all honesty, I have nothing against Lance or his story in particular, I would just love to see a celebrity write a book about something that matters. Perhaps a battle against global warming, or their efforts to feed starving children around the world would make an interesting celebrity novel. Unfortunately, if it isn’t an autobiography, celebrities are telling us their diet secrets.

Since Lance and Reichen ended their relationship, we haven’t heard anything about either man involved in the couple. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Lance Bass is only writing a book to keep his name in the papers. Maybe he doesn’t think people will care either, but the pay check sure can’t hurt. Is a tell-all book the answer to every celebrities career woes? I’m sure the Surreal Life is always looking for a new victim for the next season. Lance is probably more than welcome in their latest freak show.

Lance Bass is one of the nicer celebrities that I’ve ever met, and I truly commend him for taking the courage to come out in front of the entire world. I cannot, however, stand by and let him continue to milk it for all it’s worth. You’re gay, we get it. I don’t need a book to explain to me the bitter details of your homosexuality. I’m not trying to take your struggle away from you, if anything I can relate to it in my own way and fully respect where you’re coming from.

Good Luck Mr. Bass, you’re book is going to need it.
