Daytime television couldn’t have dreamed this story up if they tried. A famous singer, a million dollar box office champ, a passionate romance turned trailer park drama, and a tiny baby caught in the middle. This is the stuff Jerry Springer dreams about at night while he’s sleeping on a pile of money. For some celebrity couples, staying together is hard enough but for Eddie Murphy and Melanie Brown breaking up was only the beginning.
When Eddie Murphy and Melanie Brown first started dating their relationship was often described as perfect. Many reports spoke of the couple being happy and in love and even preparing for a quickie marriage. Soon after, the couple’s relationship soured when Melanie Brown announced she was pregnant, and Eddie Murphy claimed he wasn’t even the father. While Melanie did her best to reach out to the estranged father of her baby, Eddie continued to insult the former Spice Girl, and refuse to have anything to do with the file. Recently, Melanie has kicked her claim into high gear by bringing Murphy to court and forcing him to give a DNA test to prove he’s the father of her daughter.
Melanie Brown doesn’t strike me as the type to cause a controversy over something like this. Personally, when I first heard that Eddie Murphy was denying that the child was his, I was shocked. After all the reports of how in love and happy the two were together, I was shocked to see it come to an end so quickly and bitterly. You would think that even for the sake of a child, whether it’s his or not, Eddie would be willing to put the bitterness aside and be civil towards Melanie in a gesture of goodwill to the child. For that matter, if you’re not the father and you dislike Melanie so much, wouldn’t proving her wrong with a DNA test be the perfect revenge?
I don’t like to see children caught in the middle of disputes like this. Sure, the baby may be too young to comprehend what’s going on, but in the end all this negativity could start to affect someone that young. Is Eddie Murphy the father? I think so, but clearly I wasn’t there during conception. Should Eddie be a man and at least submit to the DNA test to prove his innocence, or perhaps discover he’s a father again? Absolutely.
Situations like these are truly tragic. If Eddie does in fact turn out to be the father of the child in question, I should hope he’s not going to continue to behave in this negative, disrespectful manner. Eddie, to my knowledge, has been a great father to his kids. I’m not here to berate him or to belittle his parenting skills, I’m just here to question the maturity of someone like Eddie Murphy. In the past, we’ve seen him, allegedly, walk out on the Oscars because he lost the Best Supporting Actor trophy to Alan Arkin. This sort of immature behaviour is nothing new for Eddie Murphy and frankly I would loved to have seen his reaction when he ‘mistakenly picked up the transsexual prostitute’.
Scary Spice is doing her best to maintain an air of maturity in a distressing situation. It appears as though Melanie is taking the high road in a situation that could have turned even worse a lot sooner. I give Melanie as much props as humanly possible, and perhaps I’m biased due to my love of the Spice Girls, but I certainly hope Eddie is the father and he can help give their daughter the love she needs. Life is short, and I really believe that we should all band together to make it as peaceful and happy as possible. I’ll probably never be a great parent, if I even become one, but I’ll do my best to make sure that child is safe and happy… and frankly, I hope they’ll do the same.
