Jann Arden once sang about a mother being someone to turn to in a time of need, someone who becomes that rock you can always stand by, and someone to constantly keep you grounded. For many people, they’re not as lucky as Jann. We aren’t all lucky enough to have a strong supportive family, a group of people who are willing to go to the ends of the Earth and back for us. Those of us who do have that, can only imagine what it’s like for someone to go through the kind of hard up bringing Lindsay Lohan has had.
Since her days as an adorable young redhead in The Parent Trap, we’ve watched Lindsay Lohan ‘mature’ and grow into one of the most talked about young actresses in Hollywood. Lindsay has done pretty much everything ranging from all night partying, alleged drug addiction, taking a stint in rehab, and fighting with every young socialite on the planet. Gone are the days when Lindsay was simply the cute actress from Freaky Friday or Mean Girls. She’s quickly became a star, for all the wrong reasons. For someone who wants to be taken seriously as an actress, Lindsay has quickly turned herself into a walking, talking joke.
The latest rumour surrounding the lovely Miss Lohan is about her all night partying. A video tape surfaced showing someone who is allegedly Lindsay Lohan snorting lines of cocaine in a bathroom at a club in L.A. Whether or not this is Lindsay, or what she’s actually doing has yet to be determined or admitted, or really even commented on by Lindsay. I’m sure Lindsay has had a rough childhood with a father in prison and a stage mother willing to do anything to make her daughter famous, or herself famous as the case may be. But there comes a time in every parent's life, no matter how self centered you are, when you have to put your own needs aside and give your child a good smack upside the head to bring them back to reality.
Dina Lohan, Lindsay’s mother, often refers to herself as “White Oprah” and talks to a lot of media outlets about her daughter’s antics while attempting to make herself a household name. What Dina and other celebrity parents need to understand is that sometimes, your job, your career, and your dreams have to be put aside for the sake of your child. Right now, more than anything, Lindsay needs to know that her mother, her family, and her friends are worried about her and care about her. They need to stop worrying about offending Lindsay and losing her income and worry about her well being. It seems rehabilitation wasn’t enough for Lindsay. Maybe the loving hand of a mother is?
I can just picture what my mother would say or do if I went on an alleged drug induced and alcohol fueled binge for one weekend. No good parent would be able to allow their child, whether they’re twelve, twenty, or thirty three, to go on some crazy downward spiral without trying to take some kind of control over their antics and make them see reason. There is of course the possibility that Dina is trying to make her daughter smarten up, but the way Lindsay's been behaving, I certainly wouldn’t count on it.
As an actress, I enjoy Lindsay Lohan. Mean Girls is one of my favourite movies of all time, A Prairie Home Companion was excellent, and I even enjoyed the critically panned Georgia Rule. As a much talked about celebrity tart, I really can’t stand Lindsay, but I do hope she finds some way to clean up her act. It’s almost heart breaking to see someone my age throwing away one of the greatest opportunities she’ll probably have in her life time for a little partying. Only time will tell if Lindsay will truly clean up her act and if Dina actually cares about her family, but for now I just want Lindsay to know the following things: You’re talented, you’re smarter than this, and people would kill to be you right now… don’t blow it.
Sean (Seriously, Georgia Rule was funny.)
