I'll Tell You What I Want

Fashion, music, scandal, and celebrity can all be used to define a generation. For some it’s a war, for other’s it’s the hip shaking of Elvis Presley. The Beatles led the British Invasion of the 1960’s. Elvis Presley broke hearts and shook his hips through the 1950’s to impact music as we know it today. Frank Sinatra took the 1940’s by storm with his charming good looks and classic songs. Donna Summer was the reigning queen of disco in the 1970’s, and Madonna showed us how to shock the nation during the 1980’s. For many of us who grew up during the 1990’s, there are several groups that came to fame and disappeared in the blink of an eye. But no group could define my child hood like five sassy ladies from across the pond.

During the 1990’s the Spice Girls achieved international success. Selling over fifty million albums, coining a catch phrase, and having a hit movie under their belts, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, and Melanie Chisholm have had more success in four years than many of us will have in a life time. The Girl Power movement came to an end in 1998 when Geri Halliwell abruptly left the group during their sold out Spice World tour. Since then the girls have struck out on their own with solo albums, fashion lines, and becoming mothers, trying to make it in the world on their very own.

Through varying degrees of success and countless rumours of a reunion, it’s being reported that the girls are in the studio working on a new album to be released around Christmas time. Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton were photographed leaving a recording studio last weekend laying down vocals for their up coming reunion album. Sources say that Victoria Beckham was the driving force behind the groups return to Girl Power, however… no good reunion happens without a few dramas along the way. Rumours have surfaced regarding Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm’s involvement in the project, or allegedly, lack there of. Apparently Mel C isn’t too inclined to continue with the reunion efforts and would rather promote her solo work. News flash Melanie, I may own all of your solo albums to date, but your career will never out shine the mark made by the Spice Girls.

Since the day the Spice Girls announced they were taking a break from the girl group to pursue solo projects and other interests. Only Victoria Beckham, through marriage to superstar soccer player David Beckham, has been able to keep her fame and notoriety as a part of one of England’s most talked about celebrity couples. But even with Victoria’s notoriety, have the Spice Girls waited too long to have a successful come back?

Everyone has an opinion about the Spice Girls. Whether you love them, hate them, or simply just know who they are, the Spice Girls are arguably one of the most successful girl groups of all time. Personally, the music of the Spice Girls will never get old. Their music is fun, catch, and up beat something that can help you through some of the dullest days and bring a smile to your face. I would love to see the girls get back together and put out more albums. However, I’m not entirely sure that all of their fans would be as open to the idea of a comeback. The Spice Girls came out when I was eleven years old, ten years later, would people still be in love with their crazy antics? I know I am, but their last effort, Forever, didn’t prove to be very successful.

Like any good come back it has nothing to do with the group themselves. We know the Spice Girls have a strong fan base and the ability to make hit music, it’s just a matter of recreating that time and place. There’s definitely something magical about the five girls together that sparked an international craze, but minus one girl, they couldn’t do it again. The comeback really depends on the music itself. The girls have managed to stay in the public eye through scandal, solo projects, and motherhood, so it’s difficult to forget them. Hopefully they’ll have a great team of producers behind them and the ability churn out some chart topping hits.

Whether they make it big or they fade back into obscurity, one thing is for sure… I’ll buy their record, I’ll support them, and maybe if I’m lucky… I’ll get to meet them.
