This morning as I rolled out of the bed I told myself something magical is going to happen today. Little did I know that I was about to be very, very wrong. As I strolled into work feeling extremely exhausted and wishing I didn’t have to be in the Star! Daily office for another five hours, I got ready to make some TV. After doing a quick interview about the upcoming Much Music Video Awards I sat down at my desk to get ready to write my BLOG for the day. Luckily for me, the office would soon be in a tizzy as Paris Hilton got herself out from behind bars and locked away in her very own home under house arrest.
After serving a miraculous three days is jail, Paris Hilton is going home. Although the real reason has yet to be revealed to the public, a press release is stating that Paris is going home for medical reasons. After her stay in jail was already cut in half, and now she doesn’t even have to serve it at all. Even though she’s being released, Paris will serve her full sentence (forty more days, some how she’s allegedly served five) under house arrest with an ankle monitor strapped to her.
Nobody should be surprised by the fact that Paris got out of prison. She may not have been given preferential treatment by the courts, but she’s got one hell of a lawyer. There are so many claims flying around the internet right now about the ‘medical’ reason for Paris’ removal from prison. Allegedly Paris was suffering from some sort of mental problems even having her psychiatrist visit her twice in the past three days. Apparently Paris thought of committing suicide and was very depressed during her time behind bars. Personally, I find that shocking… I thought prison was a walk in the park.
I don’t understand how anyone can consider Paris’ house arrest an adequate punishment for her crime. Sure, Paris didn’t kill anyone, but she certainly could have while driving drunk. Maybe she doesn’t deserve to be locked up for all time, but being locked away in a multi million dollar home with all her prized possessions and sense of home around her, isn’t really punishment. In fact this seems like a pleasant vacation away from the paparazzi.
What has our society come to that we’re idolizing celebrities so much that they’re even above, or at least able to dance their way around, the law? Certainly I am a fan of certain musicians or actors or celebrities in general but that doesn’t mean I treat them any differently than I would treat a stranger I meet on the street or someone I consider a good friend. Once the law is broken you should be held accountable for your actions, even if your last name is Hilton.
It wouldn’t be a far stretch to assume that Paris Hilton will be having a home coming party this weekend in her jail cell. I know if I had just cheated the system and gotten sprung from jail early I’d be doing my best to enjoy a ‘normal’ life while under house arrest. Perhaps a better punishment would have been to deny Paris visitors and force her to trade in her designer clothes for Wal-Mart originals. Maybe an even funnier punishment would be forcing Paris Hilton to wear no make up, a sweat suit, and get her to walk down Hollywood Boulevard handing out flyers with information on drunk driving.
Then again, I’ve recently come to accept that celebrities may not be curing cancer, and they may not be protecting the innocent on a daily basis, but they are treated as though they are doing us an amazing service. Maybe our society is wrong and we shouldn’t allow one person to be treated differently, but the sad reality is… that isn’t our society. No matter how we complain or how excited we are… Miss Hilton is once again free… and I’m sure we can look forward to further adventures in the illegal life of Paris.
Sean (I’m impressed she lasted three days.)
