Fame comes quickly for those who least expect it. For five sassy ladies from England, they’re lives would change dramatically over the course of five years. Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham’s lives would change drastically when they became members of the British quintet, the Spice Girls. Following the split of one of the biggest girl groups in music history, they’ve tried everything to keep their names in lights. With most of the solo Spice Girls giving up on their quest for solo music stardom, Victoria Beckham may be heading back to the spot light.
Victoria Beckham and the rest of the Spice Girls are getting ready for their upcoming reunion, but it looks like Posh Spice may be getting ready to strike out on her own again. The Spice Girls scored several number one hits and sold out stadiums around the world at the peak of their success. After Geri Halliwell left the group in 1998, the girls battled on with the failed release of their album Forever. Since the fivesome split up, each has gone on to attempt a solo music career. Victoria Beckham released her self titled debut album in 2001. After failing to make a strong impression on the British charts, Victoria Beckham found herself pregnant (for the second time) and without a record label. Following the failure of the album, Victoria released the single Let Your Head Go which charted at number three on the UK charts, unfortunately Victoria has since halted her musical endeavors. Recently however, rapper Nas has collaborated with Mrs. Beckham on a song called Full Stop, which may signal Victoria’s attempt at a return to music.
It’s pretty apparent that with all the Spice Girls reunion rumours flying around the internet that next week’s announcement should have something to do with their plans to reunite. As I’ve made painfully clear to the entire world The Spice Girls are, to this day, one of my favourite groups. I’m fairly certain I’ve also expressed the fact that I own every single solo release by a Spice Girl, including Victoria’s failed music attempt. Victoria Beckham may not be the most amazing singer in the world, and her music may not have been very good, but I don’t know that I am entirely willing to write her off as a singer. If Paris Hilton can hire enough producers and writers to give her a decent record, why can’t Posh?
To be successful in the music industry it sometimes seems to take very little musical talent. With all the advancements made in technology you can turn a singer like Paris Hilton into a top-twenty hitmaker. They may not have the best voices, but with killer writers, a hot track, and some amazing producers, almost anyone could lay down a hot track. What has changed about the music industry is the power of celebrity. You may not require killer talent, but you require that IT factor in order to make it. People need to not only be attracted to your music and your manufactured sound, they have to be willing to stand behind you. I for one, am willing to stand behind Posh Spice, but is the rest of the world ready for her new sound?
Nas may be a successful rapper in his own right, but has he lost it? Nas’ last album Hip Hop is Dead failed to make a huge impact in the music industry. The rapper has collaborated with the former Spice Girl on their track Full Stop. Personally, I’m still forming an opinion on the song. I’m clearly biased when it comes to anything that a Spice Girl releases, but in this case it may not be so bad. Nas may no longer be at the top of his game, and Victoria is one of the most talked about celebrities today, although she has fallen from musical heights since her departure from the Spice Girls. Can two less-than-successful musicians pull it together and create a hit track? Maybe, but really only time will tell.
Victoria has some good music potential in my eyes. Let Your Head Go is one of my favourite pop songs. Whether or not her style of music would even make it outside of the UK remains to be seen, but I think it’s worth a chance. Even if she isn’t planning a comeback, or even if it fails, Victoria Beckham isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. She’ll be strapping on her little black dress and singing her heart out with the Spice Girls again soon, and even if that fails to come to fruition, Victoria Beckham will always be famous for one thing… David.
