It has been said that romance is dead. No longer are we able to wait for our prince charming on a gallant white steed to save us from the dragon and sweep us off our feet. The picture of a family with two kids, a quaint house with a white picket fence and a beautiful garden is fading further and further from memory. As our priorities have shifted over time from love and happiness to success and sex, it seems that people are no longer looking for love, they’re just looking for something, or someone, to pass the time.
Enrique Iglesias is often considered one of the most attractive men on the planet. With his chiseled good looks and his soulful ballads men and women around the world swoon at the thought of spending a night with Mr. Iglesias. Unfortunately, for many, Enrique is currently in a relationship with tennis star Anna Kournikova. Rumours have been swirling for quote some time that the two may even be married. Whatever the state of their relationship, Enrique expressed his jealousy of his gay friends recently in an interview with Genre magazine. The pop star expressed his belief that when his gay friends are out of town that gives them permission to partake in ‘extra curricular activities’ while away from their significant other.
I have to say as a gay male I’m pretty offended by this outlook. I’m sure that there are those men who cheat on their significant other (straight or gay) at any given moment during the day. Both men and women have a history of cheating on their spouse. To say that cheating in general is okay, is a stupid statement by any human being. Whether you’re straight or gay shouldn’t matter, cheating is a bad idea. Maybe there are gay people out there who believe that while their significant other is away that gives them permission to cheat, I say… who the hell do you think you are?
Cheating is perhaps the worst idea anyone can possibly think of. Not only are you openly hurting someone you supposedly to care about, but you’re also being deceitful. You may think you’ll never get caught but at one point or another you’ll end up on Maury having to reveal your most shameful secrets when a loved one confronts you in front of the entire world. It’s important as members of the human race that we learn to respect one another in all aspects of life, especially in terms of relationships. On top of the emotional toll that cheating can take on a person, there can be physical side affects as well. Let’s face it people, we all took “Health” in elementary school and we’re all aware of STD’s. While people tend not to think about the aftereffects of a one night stand, you could in fact find yourself infected with who knows what. If you’re going to cheat, just break up with the person before you do it… save us all a little trouble in the end.
What concerns me even more than the ignorance of cheating is Enrique’s stupidity when it comes to his relationship. Personally, if I were dating someone and they publicly expressed their desire to cheat on me, I would dump his ass faster than a speeding bullet. I can only imagine what Anna Kournikova’s reaction to this article would be, unless she’s well aware of his desires. Anna Kournikova is a successful, attractive, seemingly intelligent woman in her own right. Just because Enrique has a cute smile and a nice stomach doesn’t mean she should stick around, especially if he’d rather sew his wild oats as often as possible with as many people as possible.
Perhaps due to the decline of love in our society we’ve established the idea of an open relationship, which in itself is a terrible idea. There’s no reason I would ever participate in an open relationship no matter how much I loved the other person. Maybe I’m a fool for thinking the way that I do, but I still believe in love. Romance may no longer exist, and love may be a thing of the past… but I sit here in an effort to hold out. I’m willing to dream, willing to stay single for as long as I have to… but I’m not going to end up like Enrique or his gay friends. So to all you single people out their holding out for a hero or doing their best believe in love, I’m with you… and I wish us all the best of luck.
