Victoria Beckham... Superstar?

Blog by Sean Gehon, Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Less than one week ago, life on this planet as we know it has changed. In case you’re curious, we didn’t cure cancer, there is no cure for the AIDS virus, and children are still starving all around the world. As time goes on and our priorities shift, the media focuses more and more on what entertains us as opposed to what may in fact help us. While we’re still quickly killing the planet and dooming us all to a future of uncertainty and possible destruction… we know one thing for sure: Victoria Beckham has made it to America.

Last night CTV aired Victoria Beckham: Coming to America. The show featured Victoria Beckham’s journey from merry old England, to pursue fame, fortune and adventure in the United States of America. As Victoria got ready for the arrival of her husband, David and their three sons Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo, we watched her get a driver’s license, shop four houses, and even throw the first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game. Victoria’s reality show showed a new side of the Spice Girl turned fashion icon. We saw Victoria smile, laugh, tell a few jokes, and even stumble home to meet her two closest friends drunk after a visit to the neighbors. England may already love Mrs. David Beckham, but are we ready for this latest British Invasion?

I’ve made it no secret that I love anything to do with the Spice Girls. Yesterday I rearranged my entire evening plan in an effort to watch Victoria’s reality television debut. In all honesty, after being trimmed from a six-part reality series to a one-hour special, I wasn’t expecting much. As much as I love Victoria Beckham and support her in anything that she does, you really have to be skeptical when something is trimmed that drastically. Frankly, I was extremely entertained by the one hour special. Victoria proved that she isn’t the pouting, robotic bitch that she’s painted to be.

This is really the first time we’ve had the chance to see Victoria in any setting outside of an interview. Whether or not the show was extremely ‘real’ or scripted, we did get the opportunity to see a new side to Posh. But, can the Spice Girl turn herself into the next big thing in North America, or is she doomed to fade into obscurity? There are several things to look at when you consider the fate of Victoria Beckham as a celebrity… the most important being, what exactly does she do? She’s a mother of three, a former pop star, and a fashion icon who apparently designs clothes.  She doesn’t act, she doesn’t dance… does any of that equal superstar? Paris Hilton parties and creates drama and that’s what’s turned her into the A-list celebrity that she is. Victoria doesn’t go to clubs, she doesn’t get caught without panties, and she isn’t often involved in any celebrity feuds that I can think of, so why do we care about Posh Spice?

Victoria Beckham is building a name, a career, and a celebrity status for being Victoria Beckham. She may not be the most talented celebrity we’ve ever come across, but most of the time you really don’t have to be. Posh is married to one of the most attractive men on the planet, she’s the mother of three beautiful children, and she’s one of the most talked about women on the planet. Whether or not Victoria is conventionally famous, or will ever be again, is up for debate. One thing I do know for sure is that she’s going to keep everybody talking for quite sometime. The woman can’t leave her home without being hounded by an army of photographers. Interest in Victoria, David, and their family is at an all time high. Perhaps this is the time that Victoria will re launch a solo music career, or kick her fashion line into high gear and become the next big fashion designer.

With the media constantly interested in her every move, the world is Victoria’s oyster. As her life begins in America, I for one am excited to see what she’ll get up to. I look forward to your misadventures Mrs. Beckham, may we all survive the tidal wave of publicity that is Posh and Becks come to America.
