You Should Be Dancin'... Yah!

Blog by Sean Gehon, Wednesday, August 29, 2007

It may be sad to say, but I often find myself planning my life around my favourite television programs. Depending on the season, my Tuesdays and Wednesdays are taken up by American Idol, and with a new season of Ugly Betty on the horizon my Thursdays will soon be off limits. Now that the cast of Dancing With the Stars has been announced, I’m getting ready to say goodbye to more free time as season five debuts on September 24th.

This morning the latest B-List stars have been announced to try the tango, woo us with the waltz, or marvel us with the mambo! In case you haven’t heard, here’s the list of celebrities who’ll be competing for the disco ball trophy:

Jennie Garth - Actress of Beverly Hills 90210 fame.
Marie Osmond – 70’s icon.
Albert Reed – Model.
Melanie Brown – Scary Spice.
Helio Castronetes - Race car driver.
Jane Seymour – Dr. Quinn Medecine Woman
Jose Maran – Model.
Sabrina Bryan - Member of the Cheetah Girls.
Mark Cuban – Billionaire.
Cameron Mathison – Actor on All My Children.
Floyd Maywather – Boxer.
Wayne Newton – Las Vegas entertainer!

These stars join the likes of former contestants Jerry Springer, Mario Lopez, and most recent champion Apollo Anton Ono. Now the question remains, which celebrity is set to dance their way to the disco ball trophy, and who stands the greatest chance of messing up their foot work.

If I had to choose an early favourite, I would say soap star, and my future husband, Cameron Mathison probably has what it takes to make the ladies swoon. Dancing With the Stars caters to a mostly female fan base, and someone as good looking as Cameron is sure to make the ladies scream as he gyrates his hips on the dance floor. On top of his chiseled chest, Ryan already comes with a strong dedicated fan base through his work on All My Children. What can I say soap opera fans can be hard core and dedicated? One thing I learned quickly as a child, you do not interrupt Mom when she’s watching her stories.

Unfortunately I think it’ll be the Models, Jose Maran, and Albert Reed that wind up falling short on Dancing With the Stars this season. As an avid watcher, I must point out that no model has ever faired very well, often leaving early due to a lack of an already-developed fan base. Stars like Marie Osmand, Melanie Brown and Jennie Garth may find that they have a leg up on the competition due to their already loyal fans. Who knows, even Sabrina Bryan of Cheetah Girls fame may find herself lucky with support of the tweens.

Whoever winds up triumphant, I know I’ll be throwing my support behind Melanie Brown. Even though she’s my least favourite Spice Girl, the fact remains that she is a Spice Girl. I don’t know if she’ll be a good dancer, or even if anyone else will support her, but I’m excited to see how she’ll manage in the first round of competitions. I don’t know for sure who’ll win, and I definitely can’t guarantee anything, but I do know that I’ll be glued to my television set on September 24th to cheer on Scary Spice, and to see whose tango will triumph, and who’s Paso Doble won’t pass the test.
