Idolize Me!

Blog by Sean Gehon, Tuesday, September 11, 2007

Nothing says summer is over than the end of Canadian Idol. After yet another summer of high notes and crushing defeats, tonight we crown the winner of the fifth season of Canada’s most popular show. Bon Jovi, Avril Lavigne and last season’s winner Eva Avila will be there to crown either JayDee Bixby or Brian Melo the latest Canadian Idol.

I don’t know what it is, but I find myself constantly drawn towards the Idol franchise. American, Canadian, Australian, or even the original Pop Idol offer something that I can’t even explain. Maybe it’s something to do with watching men and women across the country put their hopes and dreams on the line for all of us to see. There’s something kind and sweet about watching people sing and hope and pray that you fall for them somehow, and choose to support their dream. At the same time, Idol also promotes the heart breaking aspect of people coming so far, only to fail and lose their chance at claiming Idol’s top prize.

That being said, what does claiming the Canadian Idol crown mean for those who spend months of their life singing their hearts out to win your vote? Frankly, it means a guaranteed recording contract and an easy one million dollars. Perhaps you’ll go on to achieve some level of fame and be lucky enough to solidify a career in music for many years to come, but is anything guaranteed other than the cash prize? Not really. For that matter, what does being an “Idol” really mean?

Do these kids really go into a competition like Canadian Idol hoping to be adored and idolized by their fans across Canada or are they simply trying to break into an industry that hasn’t yet given them the time of day? The unfortunate thing with making it in the recording industry is your sudden status as an idol, and as a celebrity. It’s that status that may very well be the down fall of many of today’s young stars like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. Fame can do strange things to a person who isn’t prepared to walk down that road, and tonight, either JayDee or Brian will find themselves cemented in the ranks of Canadian celebrity… whatever that means.

Tonight I lend my support to Brian Melo. I don’t know what it is, perhaps it’s the raw talent, perhaps it’s his charming smile and polite demeanor, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that a good friend of mine is willing to bear his children. Whatever reason I choose to support Brian, I’m almost positive he’ll come out on top tonight. JayDee gave it his best effort, and I’m pretty sure that with a few more years under his belt and a better understanding of his voice and presence on stage, he’ll truly emerge as a great Canadian talent…

Unfortunately, only one will be crowned the winner, and I’ll be there tonight to wish them good luck!

Sean (I miss Carly Rae Jepsen… )
