I’m probably the wrong person to write anything about the fashion industry. I’ve grown up for most of my life as the awkward kid from Regina, Saskatchewan doing my best to appear appropriately dressed at all times. More often then not I would like to believe that it turned out okay and I have yet to completely embarrass myself in front of the entire world. I may not be a trend setter and I may not know my way around a fake Fendi hand bag, but I do know crazy when I see it, and Naomi Campbell is all sorts of crazy.
On Friday Naomi Campbell, Iman, and Andre Leon Talley were invited to discuss racism in the fashion industry. Naomi made quite the interesting statement in regards to British Vogue. Not only did Naomi accuse the publication of being racist by favouring white models over black ones, but she even went as far to suggest that the magazine refused to allow her to appear on their cover. It was later revealed that not only has Naomi Campbell appeared on the cover of British Vogue seven times, but she was also the first black model in history to appear on that cover. I’ve always suspected Naomi Campbell was crazy, but this may have taken the cake.
I am all for equality in this life time. Everyone deserves a fair shot and it is rude and ignorant for anyone to discriminate against someone else. Before reading this statement by Naomi Campbell, I was fairly certain that you couldn’t get any lower than blatant discrimination, but I’m willing to say I was wrong. Blatantly lying about something like this is not only embarrassing on your part, but pretty stupid. Mind you if I were British Vogue I probably wouldn’t want to put someone with a reputation like Naomi Campbell’s on the cover of my magazine, but that’s just me.
Naomi Campbell is probably one of the most beautiful women on the planet. As we’ve seen, the personality doesn’t necessarily match the exterior. Now, Naomi Campbell is a super model and has probably posed for more pictures than I can imagine ever taking in my life. Had she appeared on the cover once a long time ago, perhaps I could excuse her decision to omit that moment from her memory. However, having appeared seven times and even making history by appearing on the cover is probably not something you’d forget. I’ve never made history, but if I had I’d like to think that it would be something I would remember and be proud of for the rest of my life. Apparently Naomi Campbell is too busy hurling cell phones at her assistants to remember her career achievements.
Once upon a time I came up with a joke. That joke had something to do with people either being pretty or smart. I chose to believe that people either got to be beautiful, or intelligent and were incapable of being both. Now I don’t generally believe that to be true, but people like Naomi Campbell make it difficult to believe that there is anything beneath the surface of a super model. She’s hot, she can take a picture, but she obviously has nothing relevant, intelligent, or interesting to say. Perhaps this a lesson to all you kids out there who believe looks are everything. It’s nice to look good, but it’s even better to be good, intelligent, and positive. Naomi Campbell will probably continue to model, but she’ll probably do her best to keep her mouth shut from now on.
