Tuesday, August 19, 2008Christina Applegate won the cancer war after making the ultimate sacrifice – removing her breasts. The actress, 36, revealed earlier this month that she had breast cancer, and although it was caught in early stages, she decided not to take any chances. "My decision after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities... was to have a bilateral mastectomy," she revealed Tuesday on Good Morning America. The star of Samantha Who? explained she carries the disease's mutation, BRCA1, which increases the chance of recurrence and severity. "I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything. I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me." Nancy Priddy, Applegate's mother, battled the same beast for many years, which prompted the actress to act so definitively. "I watched her have a mastectomy, and then I watched her go through two years of chemotherapy and eight surgeries and a hysterectomy," she said. "I watched this woman survive... so for me there was always that sense that I was going to be okay, no matter what." The Emmy-nominated TV star underwent surgery three weeks ago. "Besides me being really vigilant about it [mammograms and self-examinations], it is the No.-1 reason I am going to live," she explained. And she looks forward, with a great sense of humour, to having reconstructive surgery. "I'm gonna have cute boobs till I'm 90." Samantha Who? resumes filming in September. Applegate will also appear on the TV special Stand Up to Cancer, airing Sept. 5. Summary by Jocelyn Nespiak for Star! News Photograph courtesy Getty Images/Alberto E. Rodriguez |
