Joaquin Phoenix quits acting

Joaquin Phoenix Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Actor Joaquin Phoenix shocked fans Monday when he announced his retirement from acting during a benefit for Paul Newman's camps for kids.

The 34-year-old big screen star plans to sing instead, according to People.com.

"... This will be my last performance as an actor," Phoenix said referring to his upcoming romantic film Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow.

"I'm working on my music," he said.

His representative confirmed the news to Extra explaining, "That is what he told me."

The two-time Oscar nominee developed a passion for music while working on the 2005 Johnny Cash film Walk The Line. His soundtrack vocals and guitar strumming won him a Grammy Award. Ever since, he's been making music, according to WENN.

Currently Phoenix is recording an album with British rocker Tim Burgess from The Charlatans.
