Friday, May 04, 2007Anjelina Jolie has been chosen by Mariane Pearl herself for the role as an Afro-Cuban and Dutch widow in A Mighty Heart. Pearl is the widow of journalist Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002. Jolie was chosen for the role over several other actresses of colour, most notably Mission Impossible 2 and Crash star Thandi Newton. Newton is of mixed Zimbabwean and British descent, and is a dead ringer for Mariane. Newton said that she would have loved to play the role but wasn't asked, and that she doesn't plan to judge the film until she has seen it. Pearl chose Jolie because the two have gotten to know each other over the past few years on a personal level. They realized that they had so much in common ever since their first 'playdate' with their children. "We cooked pasta; it was actually good. And then we started talking about changing the world…" Pearl said of their first meeting. When asked about playing the role, Jolie told Glamour Magazine that she was so nervous. "I mean, it’s like you’re in a roomful of your closest friends and somebody says, 'Why don’t you get up and imitate the friend to your left?' Nobody would want to do that, ever! Much more than how Mariane looks or acts, I wanted to express her essence."
