Wednesday, March 19, 2008Will Smith and Tom Cruise might both have a penchant for playing maverick heroes who save the world, but they do not share a religion. Smith has issued a statement quashing speculation that he’s a Scientologist. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Radar magazine published a cover story for April titled: "Scientology Under Siege," making the case that Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett - close friends of celeb Scientologist uber-couple, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes - have been lured into the controversial faith. The magazine said, "The Church has also set its sights on African Americans, opening up a center in Harlem in 2003 and making a strong play for Hollywood supercouple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett." If that were true, Smith would be joining the ranks of fellow celebrities following the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard, including Kirstie Alley, Beck (!?!), Lisa Marie Presley and Jenna Elfman. But both Smith and his rep say these allegations are 100 per cent untrue. Says Smith: "You don't have to be Jewish to be a friend of Steven Spielberg. You don't have to be a Muslim to be a friend of Muhammad Ali. And you don't have to be a Scientologist to be a friend of Tom Cruise. I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions. And I respect all people and all paths." Tom Cruise's relentless flying of the Scientology flag has earned him more than his share of flak in the business, causing Hollywood big wigs to publicly disassociate themselves from the actor. Regardless of the actual connection between Smith and the Church, one can assume the megastar wants to avoid a similar fate. Photograph courtest Getty Images/Charley Gallay |
